Happy Friday the 13th.
I’ve been fiddling with census numbers some today. Here’s an interactive map from AJC that shows county level data.

I know in general terms why black belt counties are emptying. What’s the story behind McIntosh County’s population loss? It seems odd since they increased more than 25 % the last census and the one before that too.
The AP had a good story on the census too.

If you flip through their photos you’ll see several of empty buildings in Bostwick Georgia. I like the AP a lot but if they think that Bostwick was abandoned this past decade they’re wrong.
Even if they are, they make up for it by printing this map that shows what parts of the country are growing, generally everything west of the Rockies, metro Texas, most of Florida, Atlanta/Nashville/Charlotte, much of Atlantic coast, northern Virginia to Boston.

I think their growth in 2010 and the decade before that was folks buying land and building houses since it was a coastal county. Mainly retired folks. They are passing away and their heirs do not want to live there. A lot of houses for sale in McIntosh County.

I used to live on St. Simons and was in McIntosh County quite a bit. Unless you have waterfront access it is a 2-3 hour drive to a beach.
