Midday Reads for Cranky Co-Workers Day (October 27)
Hi, hi! I’m back from a bit of an absence that was my heading the Society of Georgia Archivists annual conference. It’s Cranky Co-Workers Day today, which was so silly that I had to choose it.
Let’s get to the (slightly abbreviated) news:
Pat Conroy
- The University System of Georgia is going to have to comply with the Biden Administration’s vaccination mandate for federal contractors, but unsurprisingly, they’re going to do it as narrowly as legally possible.
- The Democratic Party of Georgia has filed a federal ethics complaint against Herschel Walker. (Alternate link.)
- A grand jury has indicted a U.S. marshal and a Clayton County police officer over the 2016 death of Jamarion Robinson, who was shot 76 times.
- The nationwide distribution issues have affected school lunches in Fulton County.
Alice Walker
- President Joe Biden is still working to get a deal with Senators Manchin and Sinema on his infrastructure plan.
- A federal judge in Texas has denied Southwest Airlines pilots union’s request to block a vaccine mandate.
- Texas Republicans are launching a probe into public school library collections in the wake of its anti-critical race theory legislation. You can see the full 16-page list of books being targeted here.
- As U.S. companies increasingly rely on mandatory arbitration in workplace disputes, workers are winning just 1.6% of cases. (Alternate link.)
- A 96 year-old German woman is on trial for Nazi war crimes.
- A military coup has taken place in Sudan.
Flannery O’Connor
- Spiders can also have arachnophobia.

Far right wing going after books but mad about censorship…I’m shocked, I say. Shocked.
Also, like the USA’s failed covid response, consumerism aside, we should be tracing supply chain disruptions back to our failed system of neoliberalism that made us dependent on profit driven private enterprises for food and other necessary goods. Oops.
We are having problems with getting food to our peeps as well in Dade. https://newschannel9.com/news/back-to-school/cafeteria-complications-dade-county-schools-struggle-with-supply-chain-slowdown
