Afternoon Reads for the Day After Primary Election Day (May 25)
Good morning! I apologize for my extended absence. This past semester ended up being a whirligig at the end, and gosh am I ever glad to see summer semester here. Though, I did lose five student workers to graduation, which is wonderful, but carries a twinge of sadness with it. I’ll miss my girls!
Yesterday, as y’all definitely know, was Primary Election Day, and Georgia made some statements. Before we get to those, though, here’s the link to the Secretary of State’s elections results so you can get the rundown of how each contest went.
Now, to the news!
Pat Conroy
- Brad. Raffensperger. I believed he was going to win, but I thought it was going to be a nail biter. Nope! The AJC is calling it the upset of the night. (Alternate link.)
- Perdon’t is Perdone again.
- Here’s a look at the coming Kemp/Abrams rematch.
- The most controversial race ended up being… public service commissioner.
- Don’t forget to vote in the 10 runoff elections on June 21st! (Alternate link.)
- Fort Gordon may get a new name.
- COVID cases are on the rise again in the state. (Alternate link.)
Alice Walker
- 19 fourth graders and two teachers lost their lives in yet another school shooting yesterday.
- A new report details wide sexual abuse coverup in Southern Baptist Convention churches.
- Texas Republicans want to keep Ken Paxton, apparently.
- The House Ethics Committee is investigating three Republican Members for all kinds of potentially nefarious things. Unsurprisingly, Madison Cawthorn is one of them. (Alternate link.)
- A possible settlement deal has been reached in the West Virginia opioid case.
- A group of 150 millionaires is calling to be taxed more by the world’s governments.
- Russia has stepped up attacks in the Donbas region of Ukraine. (Alternate link.)
- China is once again ramping up its COVID lockdowns.
Flannery O’Connor
- New York has removed its last public pay phone.

Welcome back!
So democrat crossover voters is why Raffensperger won according to the AP. They helped Kemp but he didn’t need it.

I was really glad to see my good buddy Colton Moore beat Jeff Mullis’s pick for his State Senate Seat. May the 53rd State Senate Seat have a true conservative for years to come.
I was just reading the WSB version of this story: https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/ap-over-37k-voters-crossed-over-georgia-gop-primary-vote-against-trump-backed-nominees/NCWM3L3QKND2ZFUDJK7MAW6RE4/
I know people who threatened to cross over but no one who actually did. I might have done the same if “absolutely not Jody Hice no way never” had been on the ballot.
37K sounds like a lot but both Kemp and Raffensperger won handily without them.
If there were 37K or so and their intention was to embarrass Trump, they missed on Burt Jones. Jones is trumpier than just about anyone. He was on the list of fake electors in 2020 who were ready to throw out Georgia results–that is, your vote and mine. He went to Arizona earlier to learn how a real gopers handled a voting audit. I wonder how he’ll handle Kemp at the top of the ticket.
Open primaries are not a new thing in Georgia, nor is whinging about their results depending upon who is feeling chapped. It was pointless to vote in the Republican Primary for many years in the past so of course most people pulled a Democrat ballot. In more recent years Republican crossover votes were why Cynthia McKinney lost in her primary. Trying to pick your opponent can prove tricky however as that was in part how we ended up with Lester Maddox as a Governor.
And yes, my vote for Raffensperger was also more intended as a vote against Hice. Hopefully the GA Senate will just treat Jones like they did Mark Taylor. I’m more concerned with the 10th going to a runoff between Trump water hauler Doug Collins and Snuggles. Not a true Hobson’s choice but not a good one either.
I’m also finding it interesting that Republicans are not discussing the elephant in the room that is named Herschel.
Mike, not Doug, Collins. Jones is Snuggles? New to me.
The runoff could be nutso. I want to see Collins’ big rig and of course I’m hoping Trump visits. That would offer the chance for some good clean fun.
We still like our Paul Broun in Oconee. Jones finished second and Collins fourth behind Hice’s man Tim Barr.
Walker won here easily but about 10 points behind his state totals. Go Dawgs.
Oops. I knew that but in true GeorgiaPol fashion blame it on others or at least a mix up caused by a potable mix.
Yeah, Jones is Snuggles: https://www.georgiapol.com/2020/09/23/the-gagop-snuggling-up-to-snuggles/
Collins’ camp is reportedly handing out rape whistles, no reports of dog whistles yet, but he is a Trump cultist…
Walker being the linchpin for Republicans regaining the Senate is a cosmic joke. Damn good Dawg should not translate to being elected a Senator but unfortunately many Georgia voters often prove Mencken right.
